An introduction to the Sustainable Development Goals
As the fashion industry emerges from the lockdown, now is the perfect opportunity to take stock and re-evaluate our impact on the world. Sustainability and creating a greener future for fashion has long been at the top of our agenda, which is why we are proud to call Conscious Fashion Campaign one of our key partners.
Founded by Kerry Bannigan, in collaboration with the United Nations Office for Partnerships, Conscious Fashion Campaign is designed to incite action in support of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
First put into action in 2015, the SDGs are a blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all. They address the global challenges we face, including those related to poverty, inequality, climate, environmental degradation, prosperity, and peace and justice. The Goals interconnect and in order to leave no one behind, the aim is to achieve all the goals and their associated targets by 2030.
With governments, businesses and societies all working together to achieve this agenda, we thought we’d introduce the 17 goals designed to guide sustainable development in the next ten years:
No Poverty
Economic growth must be inclusive to provide sustainable jobs and promote equality.
Zero Hunger
The food and agriculture sector offers solutions for development, and is central for hunger eradication.
Good Health and Well-Being
Ensuring healthy lives and promoting the well-being for all is essential to sustainable development.
Quality Education
Obtaining a quality education is the foundation to improving people’s lives and sustainable development.
Gender Equality
A fundamental human right and a necessary foundation for a peaceful, prosperous, sustainable world.
Clean Water and Sanitation
Clean, accessible water for all is an essential part of the world we want to live in.
Affordable and Clean Energy
Energy is central to nearly every major challenge and opportunity.
Decent Work and Economic Growth
Sustainable economic growth requires societies to create the conditions that allow people to have quality jobs.
Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure
Investments in infrastructure are crucial to achieving sustainable development.
Reduced Inequalities
Policies are universal in principle, acknowledging the needs of disadvantaged and marginalized people.
Sustainable Cities and Communities
Cities provide opportunities for all, with access to basic services, energy, housing, transportation and more.
Responsible Consumption and Production
Reduce the destructive impacts on the planet caused by global consumption and production.
Climate Action
Climate change is a global challenge that affects everyone, everywhere.
Life Below Water
Careful management of this essential global resource is a key feature of a sustainable future.
Life On Land
Sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, halt and reverse land degradation, halt biodiversity loss
Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions
Access to justice for all, and building effective, accountable institutions at all levels.
Partnerships For The Goals
Revitalize the global partnership for sustainable development.
With ten years to go to achieve these global goals all eyes are now on the fashion industry as we start to reignite business. As we start to embrace a new normal, adopting these goals into your business practices should be key. Kerry will join as at Fashion Together to discuss the SDGs and ways in which we can #BuildBackBetter for a more sustainable future. Register today.
